A Portable Fingerprint Based Attendance Collection Device for College Students

INTRODUCTION
In today’s modern time, technology has reached to almost every field digitizing it to make our life better. Automation of the attendance collection process has been a well-established technology since a long time back. It is present everywhere whether it be offices, companies or schools. But there is one field where this system has not penetrated yet – its attendance of college students. Surprisingly, we will find that in the same college attendance of its staff, teachers & others might be taken using biometric devices installed.
We found opportunity to fulfill this technological gap in the higher education sector and created this product.

EXISTING SYSTEM

Any professional colleges (e.g. diploma, degree, medical, etc.) students have to give attendance of every lecture individually for each teacher and also in different locations throughout the entire day such as classroom, labs, workshops, etc. Yes, till date the attendance of college students is taken manually using a sheet of paper or using roll call on a mobile app.
This leads to multiple proxies in overall attendance. Students start skipping lectures giving poor performance in examinations.

THE NECESSITY

Most universities in India require students to have a minimum of 75% attendance in each subject to be eligible to take their semester or annual exam. The 75% average includes lectures, tutorials, and practical. If a student’s attendance falls below 75%, they may not be allowed to take the final exam and may receive a fail grade. Students fulfil these criteria easily in the current manual attendance system by doing proxy for each other and skipping lectures. This fails the entire purpose of making the above rule in the education system.
Now, it has become necessary to introduce fingerprint-based attendance collection in which proxy becomes impossible making it mandatory to attend lectures.

THE CHALLENGE

So, what is stopping the current biometric systems to be used for college students’ attendance collection. Well, its due to the following complexity & challenges involved –

  1. Students have to give attendance for each and every lecture of each subject (lecture wise attendance) unlike schools where it is taken once in a day.
  2. Also, the classrooms keep on varying (labs, workshop, fields, etc) depending upon the nature of the syllabus.
  3. Time table is not followed strictly. It can keep on changing as per requirement.
  4. Any other lecturer can take the lecture instead of someone else in many situations.
  5. It is most common practice to have extra lectures anytime as per the lecturer’s wish.
In the current scenario, there is absolutely not any commercially available product or solution developed specifically only for college students which can overcome all the challenges mentioned above.

THE SOLUTION

Here, in imbeddeX Technologies, we have been constantly working past some years to understand & overcome the above-mentioned challenges. Now we have come up with an ideal solution in a product form called TAMS – True Attendance Management System – a Portable Fingerprint Based Attendance Collection Device. It will function exactly like the existing paper-based attendance taking process, just we will be replacing the paper with a handheld portable wireless fingerprint module. Lecturer will be carrying this module and will circulate it among the students instead of the paper. Each student will mark their attendance with fingerprint authentication while passing to each other.

TAMS will be designed in such a way that it seamlessly provides a very very flexible attendance collection & reporting system based on fingerprint biometric of students. It will be independent of…
